Let’s talk
Area residents, business owners and commuters are invited to an open house to review and provide comments on a new interchange at State Highway 13 and County Highway 5 in Burnsville. Three construction staging options for the project will be presented at the open house, which is scheduled from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., Thursday, June 23, at the Burnsville City Hall, 100 Civic Center Parkway.
One option being proposed is the full closure of Highway 13 for three months. The other two options include reducing Highway 13 to one lane in each direction, or maintaining two lanes in each direction during construction for a substantially longer time than three months. With all options, access from Highway 5 to Highway 13 will be closed for extended periods. Representatives from Mn/DOT, Dakota County and the city for Burnsville will be at the open house to answer questions.
The intersection at Highways 13 and 5 was the number one recommendation for improvement along Highway 13. A corridor study found crash rates at the intersection to be higher than average for similar intersections.
Some of the benefits of a new interchange include improving connectivity between river, rail and road traffic; improving the flow of freight traffic; improving safety for motorists; creating economic development opportunities; and improving mobility and relieving congestion.
