Recovery of Body from Mississippi River on May 16, 2011

At 1123 hours today members of the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) Parks, Lakes, and Trails Division recovered a body from the Mississippi River near the I494 Wakota Bridge.  DCSO and South Saint Paul Police Department personnel were sent there after receiving a report of a body in the river.  The body was first seen by a barge operator, who called the information in to the Dakota Communications Center.  Early indications are that the body had been in the water for several days.

It is believed that the body found is related to a missing person case that the Mendota Heights Police Department (MHPD) had been investigating since April 25th. On that day a citizen/passer-by notified the MHPD of a bicycle abandoned on the Mendota Bridge.  Later that same day MHPD officers noticed a vehicle parked near the bridge that also appeared to be abandoned.  On April 29th, the Minneapolis PD took a report from a member of the clergy who reported a person missing that had been suffering from severe depression and considering suicide.  The person identified in the missing person report was the listed owner of the vehicle found near the Mendota Bridge.  Further investigation found that the owner’s manual to the bicycle abandoned on the bridge was found in the missing person’s apartment.

The body was turned over to the Minnesota Regional Medical Examiner’s Office for examination.  The identity of the person found in the water will not be revealed until positive identification is made and next of kin notified.

Questions can be directed to Investigator T. Spicer at the MHPD at (651) 452-1366 or Chief Deputy Tim Leslie at the Dakota County Sheriff’s Office, (651) 438-4710.
