Dakota County and the entire upper midwest is currently in the midst of a severe heat wave. According to the National Weather Service, these conditions are expected to remain in our area until Wednesday of this week. The high temperatures, combined with high humidity, are creating dangerous conditions for higher risk citizens that include young and the elderly.
Dakota County Sheriff Dave Bellows reminds us to drink water on a regular basis in order to remain hydrated. He also encourages checking on friends and family that are at greater risk to ensure they are able to tolerate the current weather conditions. If you do not have air conditioning, use fans to help move air in your home and close drapes or shades in the afternoon sun. Consider going to the library, theater, or shopping malls as a means of getting out of the heat.
Small children and pets should not be left in a car, as internal temperatures can exceed 110 degrees causing serious health issues. In 2011, 21 children have already died from being left in a hot vehicle according to studies by San Francisco State University. Sheriff Bellows encourages anyone that observes a small child or pet left inside a car to contact their local law enforcement agency immediately.
Fortunately, the National Weather Service does predict relief heat and humidity later this week.
