What is radon?
Radon is an odorless, colorless, tasteless gas that is produced by the natural decay of uranium and radium in the soil.  Since radon is a gas, it can easily enter homes and other buildings through cracks in the foundation.  In outdoor air, radon is diluted to very low levels.  However, inside of homes, radon may become trapped and build up to dangerous levels.  Exposure to radon increases your risk of developing lung cancer.  If you smoke and have radon exposure, your risk of developing lung cancer is even greater.

Is radon a problem in Dakota County?
In Dakota County one out of three homes have radon levels above the acceptable U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) guidelines.

What can I do about radon in my home?
You can test your home for radon and if the level is too high, you can contract with a radon remediation contractor to fix your home.

How do I test for radon?
Dakota County Water Resources Department has radon test kits available.
