  • Some Skin-Lightening Products Contain Mercury (5/25/2011)

The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) is warning state residents to stop using some types of skin creams after testing shows that they may contain dangerous levels of mercury. The products are sold as skin-lightening agents. Consumers are being advised to stop all use of these products if they can’t be sure the products are mercury-free. Consumers should not dispose skin products that may contain mercury in their normal trash. Instead, the products should be taken to a disposal site that accepts household hazardous waste. In Dakota County the products can be disposed of safely at The Recycling Zone in Eagan. A statewide list of disposal sites is available on the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) website.
