A child or adult may be eligible to receive services through the Developmental Disabilities section of Dakota County Social Services. If the person is eligible, a social worker is assigned to your family to help you identify services and supports and funding options.
Who is eligible for Developmental Disabilities services?
- Children 5 years old and younger with substantial developmental delays as determined by your school district or medical professional.
- Individuals over 5 must have an IQ under 70 or a related condition such as cerebral palsy, autism, or a seizure disorder. In addition, they must have limitations in areas such as self-care, communication, social skills, learning, mobility, self-direction, and independent living.
- The assessment to determine IQ and functional skills must be conducted by a licensed psychologist or school psychologist. Dakota County may be able to pay for the assessment if there is no other funding source.
What help is available through Developmental Disabilities services?
- Case management is provided by a social worker to help with:
- Determining needs of your child
- Identifying service and support options
- Obtaining available funding
- Support and services include:
- In- and out-of-home respite care
- In-home staff supports
- Behavioral interventions
- Community integration activities
- Home or vehicle modifications
- Therapies, special diets, or equipment not covered by insurance or other sources
- Daily living skills
- Employment supports
- Housing supports
Is there help available to pay for services?
There are a number of funding options available to assist with paying for needed supports and services. A county social worker can help you determine your options and help you apply for funding. There is no charge for this help.
