Family Health Home Visiting

Family Health Nurses can visit eligible families in Dakota County in their homes to provide support and health education.

These nurses have special training in mother and baby care. They can talk to you about labor and delivery, what you need to do to have a healthy baby and how you can be a good parent to your new baby.

What can a Public Health Nurse do for me?
  • Find services in your communities such as Medical Assistance or Women, Infants & Children (WIC)
  • Provide health counseling for families who are expecting a child.
  • Find a doctor for you and your children.
  • Give information and support to help you have a healthy pregnancy and a healthy baby.
  • Get a car seat for your child and teach you how to use it to keep your baby safe.
Can anyone have a Public Health Nurse visit?
There are some requirements for receiving nursing services. Most of the people we see are:
  • Teens who are pregnant or already have a child under 3 years old.
  • Women who are pregnant with their first child.
  • Families who have children less than 3 years old with special needs.
  • For some programs, families may need to meet income requirements. Contact Public Health Intake (or by phone: 651-554-6115) for information.
Do I have to pay to have a Public Health Nurse come to my home?
No, you will not be charged for a nurse visit. Depending upon the services you receive and your eligibility for insurance, including Medical Assistance, we will bill the insurance company for the visit. But even if the insurance company doesn't pay, you won't be charged. We will instead bill grant and county funds that we receive to provide these services.

How can I get help from a Public Health Nurse?

If this is your first child, your doctor or clinic can contact Public Health Intake (or by phone: 651-554-6115) and ask us to see you. Or, you may contact us and speak with a nurse to see if we are able to have a nurse come to your home.
