Helpers are between the ages of 13 and 18 and assist caregivers. Helpers cannot be left alone with the children. Providers are responsible to keep copies of all training certificates and to record the training dates on the Caregiver Tracking Record. Helpers must complete the Background Study Form and send them by mail to: Dakota County Social Services, 14955 Galaxie Ave., Apple Valley, MN 55124. You can also scan the forms and email them to your social worker.
The following training is required for all helpers:
- If children under age 1 are enrolled in the child care program, a minimum of a one-hour combined SIDS/Shaken Baby Syndrome training must be obtained. This training must be updated every 5 years.
- The helper must obtain 6 hours of training within the first year of employment. The SIDS/Shaken Baby Syndrome training counts towards the 6 hours.
- An approved Shaken Baby Syndrome Video must be viewed every year that the Shaken Baby Syndrome training is not required.
- A 2-hour course in child development training must be obtained the first year the helper starts. This will count in the six hours of required training.
