Substitutes are individuals over the age of 18 who care for the children while the provider is away from the child care program. They must have had background studies completed and approved. Substitutes cannot care for children for more than 30 days in a calendar year.
The following training is required for substitutes:

- If children under the age of 12 months are in the program, the substitute must have taken a minimum of one hour combined course for SIDS and Shaken Baby Syndrome Training. If two separate courses are taken, they must be one hour in length each.
- If there are no children under 12 months in the program, the substitute must have taken a one hour course in Shaken Baby Syndrome training.
