Secondhand smoke contains over 4,000 chemical compounds, including 250 known toxins and 11 known cancer causing poisons.

There is no risk-free level of exposure to secondhand smoke. Even brief exposure can be dangerous. Secondhand smoke causes 49,000 deaths per year in non-smokers, including at least 581 Minnesotans.

What you can do to prevent exposure to secondhand smoke:

• If you smoke, don’t smoke around others.
• If you smoke, quit now—for help call QUITPLAN at 1-888-354-7526.
• Pledge to make your home and car smoke-free.
• Select an apartment or townhouse in a smoke-free complex—if that isn't possible, take steps to limit your exposure.
• Choose smoke-free settings for dining, entertainment and recreation.
• Support efforts to create smoke-free public settings, indoors and outdoors.
• Report violations of the Minnesota Clean Indoor Air Act.
