Hastings Man Charged in Crash After Huffing
| [March 31, 2010] Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Daniil Mikaylovich Usachev, age 19 of Hastings, has been charged* with four counts of Criminal Vehicular Operation and one count of Fourth Degree Driving While Impaired in connection with a single vehicle crash that occurred on August 4, 2009 in Hastings. The defendant, who was 18 years-old at the time of this incident, is alleged to have been under the influence due to “huffing”, a dangerous practice of sniffing chemicals to get high. A witness said Usachev was huffing at a gathering of people at a Hastings mobile home park and then left to purchase more cans of condensed air. Two teenagers went with Usachev when he left the park. One of the passengers told police Usachev was huffing while driving, which Usachev denies. Usachev lost control of the car, left the road and struck a tree. The passengers suffered serious injuries including broken bones and lacerations. |
