Tobacco Use Limitations in Dakota County Parks
At its May 22, meeting, the Dakota County Board of Commissioners adopted a resolution limiting tobacco use on any County-owned or operated park property and recreational facilities. Beginning June 22, 2007, use of tobacco products will be allowed only in parking lots, roadways, individually rented campsites in County-owned or operated campgrounds, and as part of a traditional Native American spiritual or cultural ceremony.

Earlier this year, a group of concerned citizens approached Dakota County regarding the unhealthy environment created by using tobacco on park properties and within the proximity of adults and children engaging in or watching outdoor recreational activities. The citizen group also expressed concern that parents, leaders, and others serve as role models for youth and can have a positive effect on the lifestyle choices youth make by not using tobacco products while engaging in recreation. In addition to the health concerns, the Board considered that once tobacco products are consumed, they are often discarded on the ground, resulting in litter, increased upkeep costs, diminished aesthetics, increased fire risk, and possible ingestion by toddlers.

The Board of Commissioners saw limiting tobacco use in the parks as an opportunity to create and sustain an environment that helps protect the public health, safety and welfare of park visitors.
