Jail Medical Unit

The Dakota County Public Health Department is contracted to provide nursing care to inmates from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. weekdays and eight hours per day on weekends.

Inmate health care services are provided similar to that of an outpatient clinics. Inmates must inform nursing staff of their needs. Inmates are able to purchase non-prescription medications and are expected to self-treat some minor problems.

Medical care is offered twice a week by clinic physicians and mental health services are offered twice weekly. Mental health professionals include a psychiatrist, psychiatric nurse and a licensed psychologist.

All inmates are required to pay co-pays for any treatment or medication provided by the medical unit. Sentenced inmates or inmates who have a self-inflicted injury are required to pay the medical bill in full.
