Park System Plan goes public
Dakota County parks welcomes comment on the Parks System Master Plan. With Dakota County Parks turning 40, it’s a great time to reflect on the needs of the parks today as well as look into the future. That’s what the Park System Plan is all about. We asked residents what they wanted from their county and regional parks. Now we’re checking in to make sure we heard you right.

You told us that you love your parks and want even more things to do in them. In response, the park system plan calls for adding more of the most popular activities to each park location, including biking, hiking, and picnicking. In addition, there will be more places for you to sit and enjoy the picturesque views as well as signage that will make it easier to find your way around the parks.

Dakota County is growing, and to meet the needs of a the future population, efforts are underway to acquire property for a new regional park located near Farmington, Lakeville, and Rosemount, so you will have even more opportunities to retreat to a peaceful outdoor setting where you’ll be surrounded by the earth’s beauty.

We want to make it easier for you to get to the parks from the community where you live. To do this, we’re working to create greenway connections and trails from parks to popular places like schools, libraries, and scenic areas along the rivers. Over the next 10 years, we plan on creating 51 miles of greenways with the ultimate goal of expanding to more than 200 miles.

When you arrive at a Dakota County park, the beauty of the wilderness surrounds you. We want to make sure you continue to experience this beauty, so restoration and preservation of the natural settings and open spaces will continue to be a priority.

Great Places, Connected Places, Protected Places… that is what you’ve asked for, and we believe that is what this plan delivers.
