Mohamed Aden Hared, age 24 of Faribault, was charged* today with intentional murder in the second degree in connection with the death of Ahmed Ibrahim Cariif, age 22 of Faribault, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.

According to the criminal complaint, a report of a shooting sent the Lakeville Police Department to a parking lot at a Lakeville business, shortly after 4 a.m. on Saturday, June 29.

Hared, Cariif and a third man, worked together at the Lakeville business, had carpooled to work that day. Hared – who has a permit to carry – brought along a gun that was equipped with a flashlight attachment. The gun was left in the car while the three men went to work.

During a break at around 1 a.m., Hared went to the car and noticed the flashlight attachment was missing from his gun. Hared accused the two other men of stealing it.

At approximately 4 a.m., the three men took another break and went to the car to look for the attachment. Hared continued to accuse the two men which they both denied taking it. Shortly thereafter, Hared and Cariif got into two separate physical altercations.

During the second altercation, Hared pulled out his gun while Cariif tried to force it out his hand. Hared fired his gun and the bullet struck a nearby unoccupied vehicle. The two men yelled at Hared, “Don't shoot." Hared then fired his gun, hitting Cariif.

Cariif was pronounced dead at the scene with a gunshot wound to the chest. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office listed the manner of death as a homicide.

“It's so senseless the victim was shot to death over such a trivial matter," said County Attorney Kathy Keena. “Deadly gun violence has no place in our communities, neighborhoods or at our places of work. My condolences to the family and loved ones of Mr. Cariif."

Bail was set in the amount of $2 million without conditions ($1 million with conditions) by Judge Krista Marks. Mr. Hared's next court appearance is July 15 in Hastings.

A summary of the facts pertaining to this case can be found in the criminal complaint at Criminal Complaint Search.
