Wrongful Convictions: Causes and RemediesApril 18, noon-1 p.m.
The Great North Innocence Project (GNIP) works to free wrongfully convicted people from prison and prevent wrongful convictions from occurring in Minnesota, North Dakota and South Dakota. In this presentation, James Mayer, managing attorney at GNIP, will draw on real GNIP cases to explain the primary causes and consequences of wrongful convictions as well as how to remedy them.
Presenter Bio
Jim Mayer is a managing attorney at Great North Innocence Project where he screens, investigates and litigates cases involving claims of actual innocence. Before joining the Great North Innocence Project, Mayer spent more than a decade as a private practice litigator. During his time in private practice, he was involved in innocence work as a pro bono attorney, including death penalty cases in Louisiana.
Mayer was co-lead counsel in the post-conviction case of Michael Wearry, whose capital conviction was vacated by the United States Supreme Court in 2016. Since then, Mayer has successfully litigated post-conviction claims for Minnesota and North Dakota clients convicted of murder, attempted murder and felony child neglect.
