Fischer Avenue Trailhead

Page Content

Artist rendition of Fischer Avenue Trailhead.A new trailhead will be constructed at 13580 Fischer Ave., Nininger Township in Spring Lake Park Reserve. It will be between the Mississippi River and Bison Prairie.

The new trailhead will offer an enhanced visitor experience. It will provide greater access to the restored prairie and bison range. The project includes:

  • A picnic shelter with views of the bison range and Mississippi River
  • A paved trail that connects to existing trails, forming a loop around the bison enclosure
  • A parking lot with handicap-accessible spaces and a designated bus drop-off area
  • Upgrades to the existing Fischer Avenue
  • Onsite restroom facilities

The project's funding includes requirements to safeguard the project site. These include extensive habitat and wildlife conservation and archaeological assessment, including native tribal input.

Construction of the new facility is scheduled to begin in September 2025. It is scheduled for completion in spring 2026. Cost of construction is about $4.3 million.

During the construction, the access to Fischer Avenue will be restricted to construction vehicles. Users of Mississippi River Regional Greenway will see construction activities at the intersection with Fischer Avenue.
