Dakota County does many things to save energy. The county'​s 2009 Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas Emissions Reduction Report includes goals that focus on a variety of ongoing energy-saving priorities.

Dakota County was the first county in the state to complete a greenhouse gas inventory, measuring the amount of greenhouse gases produced by county operations. This inventory will serve as a baseline to guide county efforts to improve energy and fuel efficiencies and explore renewable energy options​.
