Wetland Banking

Wetland banking is a process where larger land tracts and wetland restoration opportunities are identified before the actual wetland impacts. This allows for the strategic placement and restoration of wetland resources and generally creates functioning wetlands prior to the impacts occurring.

From the standpoint of the applicant proposing unavoidable wetland alterations, assurances are obtained that the restored wetland is an acceptable replacement to the permitting agencies. Dakota County has been a leader in developing wetland banks within local watersheds by participating in six projects totaling more than 80 acres of restored wetland since 1996.
