Disasters, whether natural or man-made, can happen at any time. It is important that you, your family — and your pets — are prepared well ahead of any disaster. Your family should know how you will deal with your pets in an emergency. Take steps now to prepare for your pets' safety.
Pet supplies for your emergency supply kit
Water
Have enough water for three days.
Food
Have enough food for three days. Include a bowl and a manual can opener.
Medications
Include any medicine your pets take regularly.
Records and licenses
Keep a copy of your pet’s inoculations, license, and contact information for your veterinarian with your emergency supplies. Put a photo of your pet with your emergency supplies in case you are separated and need to identify your pet.
Carrier and leash
Have a transport carrier and a leash or harness on hand. Mark the carrier with your pet's name and your name, address, and phone number.
Blankets and toys
Include a blanket for bedding and some favorite toys to reduce stress.
Other supplies
Include such items as a litter box, trash bags and bleach or other cleaning materials.
Boarding your pet
In an emergency, most shelters will not accept pets—check with friends or relatives or your vet ahead of time to see if they can board your pet in an emergency.
Evacuating
If you do need to evacuate, take your pets with you.
