Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Daniel Anthony Cruz Hernandez, age 20 from Roseville, MN, has been charged* with Murder in the 2nd Degree (without intent while committing a felony) and Aggravated Robbery in the 1st Degree, in connection with the stabbing death and robbery of Jordan David Paredes, age 19, Oakdale, which occurred in South St. Paul in the early morning hours of August 2, 2017.
South St. Paul Police were dispatched to a report of a fight at approximately 3:15 a.m. on August 2, 2017. When officers arrived, they found a male, later identified as Jordan David Paredes, lying unconscious on the ground. Mr. Paredes was immediately transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. An autopsy revealed that he died from multiple stab wounds.
Police were initially told by witnesses at the scene that three people had been attacking two men, one of whom ran away while the other was punched and stabbed and fell to the ground. The attackers took items from the victim before driving away in a car. Investigators were able to identify some of the individuals involved in the incident and located the vehicle driven away from the scene of this crime on August 8, 2017. A search of this vehicle found bloodstains which were eventually matched to the victim by DNA testing.
On March 28, 2018, investigators located a witness who told them that following this incident on August 2, 2017, Hernandez told him that he had stabbed the victim and threw away the knife.
