Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Bashir Ahmed Abdulahi, age 24 of Minneapolis, has been charged* with one count of Careless Driving in connection with a two-vehicle crash that occurred on September 12, 2012, at the intersection of Highway 55 and Highway 149 in Eagan that took the life of Sandra Sechen Brodin, age 68 of Lakeville. The Dodge Caravan driven by Bashir Ahmed Abdulahi crashed into the Mini Cooper in which Ms. Brodin was a passenger as the Mini Cooper was turning with a green left turn arrow. She was transported to Regions Hospital where she later died as the result of injuries sustained in the crash.
Backstrom commented: “Our deepest sympathy is extended to the family and friends of Sandra Brodin for their great loss.” Backstrom stated this is the 10th case of Careless Driving involving a death without the driver being impaired since 2006 in Dakota County. During this time Backstrom has partnered with other organizations to pass legislation that would increase penalties for traffic crashes where an individual dies. Efforts to pass this important legislation have been unsuccessful.
Abdulahi was charged by summons and his first court appearance has not yet been scheduled.
