Man Sentenced for Assault and Kidnapping at Holiday Gas Station in Burnsville - Ariel Luis Barnett
Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Ariel Luis Barnett, age 31 of Burnsville, was sentenced today by Judge Richard Spicer to 60 months in prison in connection with taking employees of a Holiday gas station in Burnsville hostage at gunpoint which later resulted in a standoff with police on September 7, 2013.  The defendant pled guilty on December 18, 2013, to two counts of Assault in the Second Degree, two counts of Kidnapping and one count of Felon in Possession of a Firearm (all felonies) in an amended criminal complaint.

Backstrom commented:  “We are pleased to have brought the defendant to justice for his violent criminal behavior in this domestic-related incident.  We are also grateful that no one was seriously harmed during this tense stand-off.” 

Backstrom thanked the Burnsville Police Department and other law enforcement agencies for their quick response.  Backstrom praised Assistant County Attorney Tori Stewart who prosecuted this case.
