Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Dustin Charles Chenevert, age 27 of Albert Lea (currently in prison for felony DWI offense), was sentenced today to 58 months in prison by Judge Jerome Abrams in connection with the death of Colton Jayce Poplow, age 18, also of Albert Lea, that occurred on February 28, 2015, in South St. Paul. Chenevert had previously pled guilty to one count of Manslaughter in the 2nd Degree.
Backstrom stated that on February 28, 2015, medics and police officers responded to a South St. Paul hotel shortly before 10:00 a.m. on a report that an 18-year-old male was not breathing. Shortly after arriving, medics determined the male, identified as Colton Poplow, was deceased. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner later determined that the cause of death was acute methadone toxicity (overdose). Subsequent investigation by the South Saint Paul Police Department revealed that Chenevert had supplied Poplow with the methadone that caused his death.
