Dakota County Attorney James Backstrom announced that Grant David Hendrickson, age 28 of South St. Paul, was sentenced today to 390 months in prison by Judge Michael Mayer in connection with the fatal shooting of Donald Joseph Hortsch, age 69 of Rosemount, and the attempted shooting death of a 26-year-old male on November 7, 2016, at the Dollar Tree store in Burnsville. The 26-year-old shooting victim (now age 27) was paralyzed below the waist as a result of being shot twice. One bullet intended for this victim, traveled through an aisle shelf and struck Donald Hortsch, who had been shopping in the store. Hendrickson pled guilty June 6th to one count each of Murder in the Second Degree (With Intent To Kill) and Attempted Murder in the Second Degree (With Intent To Kill), both felonies.

Backstrom commented: "We are pleased to have brought this man to justice for this violent and senseless crime." Backstrom extended his sympathy to the family and friends of Donald Hortsch for their great loss. Backstrom also expressed his hope for the continued recovery of the other shooting victim who suffered great bodily harm in this case.
Backstrom praised Assistant County Attorney Kathy Keena, who prosecuted this case. Backstrom thanked the Burnsville Police Department for their quick response and thorough investigation of this case.
