Update: The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office has identified the victim as Maung Ngae, 30 years of age, who resided in St. Paul. We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of the victim for their tragic loss.
On Monday, July 23, 2018, at approximately 8:49 p.m., the Dakota County Sheriff's Office was notified of a probable drowning that occurred in the Vermillion River near the Etter Bridge in Ravenna Township. A witness told responding officers that the adult male victim was attempting to swim across the river, but the fast-moving current swept him downstream. The victim began to struggle and eventually went underwater where the witness lost sight of him.
Crews continued to search for the man for several hours. His body was found and recovered at approximately 2:00 a.m. on July 24th using sonar.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office is working on confirming the identity of the victim.
The Sheriff's Office Patrol Division, Parks, Lakes, and Trails Division, and Dive Team were assisted by the Hastings Fire Department, the Goodhue County Sheriff's Office, and the Minnesota State Patrol.
