Dakota County residents can receive a special curbside pickup rate between Memorial Day to Labor Day for mattresses or box springs. Dakota County and Certified Recycling have partnered to pick up mattresses for $50 for the first item and $25 for each additional item. There is no limit on quantity.
Instead of sending them to a landfill, Certified Recycling disassembles the mattresses and box springs to recycle the metal, wood and cloth into new products. High-quality mattresses are separated and donated to Bridging for people in need.
Mattress disposal is the top search item on the county's Recycling Guide directory. Dakota County understands that getting rid of large items like mattresses can be hard due to transportation and financial challenges. Since the start of a pilot project in 2020, Certified Recycling has picked up 2,018 mattresses and box springs from residents and kept about 110,000 pounds of material from the landfill.
