​​​​State law (Minnesota Statue 97A) says that most people must buy a license to hunt or fish. Hunting or fishing some animals or in certain areas may also need a special stamp.

All applicants must be present unless a combination license is purchased.

Most hunting and fishing licenses and stamps go on sale in mid-February. Big game licenses go on sale in mid-August.  The firearms deer season begins in early November.

Service and license centers are open for walk-ins. However, making an appointment is encouraged.

Fees vary based on the type of license or stamp purchased.

Payment options

You can pay with cash, check, money order, or a credit or debit card (Discover, Visa, or MasterCard). A 2.15% convenience fee is added for credit and debit card payments for this DVS service.​

Required identification

To buy a resident license, show a Minnesota driver's license, ID card or a Firearm Safety Certificate.

Non-residents must show a driver's license or ID card from their home state.​

There are no required forms to purchase a game or fishing license.
