Dakota County is working with the Minnesota Department of Transportation on bridge repairs and roadway improvements at County Road 42 and Interstate 35W in Burnsville.
Construction will include repairing the County Road 42 bridge deck, replacing bridge joints, repairing sidewalks, extending the eastbound County Road 42 turn lane west of Buck Hill Road and reconstructing the signal at Buck Hill Road/southbound I-35W ramp.
County Road 42 is a principal arterial roadway with an annual daily traffic volume of more than 50,000. A large amount of this traffic uses the I-35W east ramp to travel north from the Burnsville Regional Shopping Center area. This area experiences a number of traffic backups at the County Road 42 and I-35W west ramp/Buck Hill Road intersection.
The backups occur mostly in the left-most through lane, as motorists use this lane to access the double left turn lanes at the I-35W east ramp to go north on I-35W. These backups often extend into the Aldrich Avenue intersection, which results in safety and capacity issues. The project will extend the turn lane to reduce backups and improve the safety and capacity at the CR 42 and I-35W west ramp/Buck Hill Road and Aldrich Avenue intersections.
Start construction: April 2017
Complete westbound detour: May 2017
Complete eastbound detour: June 2017
