The Mississippi River Trail will extend 27 miles within Dakota County from Hastings to St. Paul. The majority of the Mississippi River Trail within Dakota County has been completed with the exception of connections in Rosemount and St. Paul.
The Rosemount connection extends from 117th Street (City of Inver Grove Heights/ City of Rosemount border) to Spring Lake Park Reserve. It has been split into two segments: west and east.
The Rosemount East project is currently in design. Last year, the County was working on an alignment that included an overpass spanning Pine Bend Trail, UP’s tracks and Highway 55, a trail along the south side of Highway 55, including an at grade railroad crossing and an underpass crossing of Highway 55. The alignment continued on private property until it tied into Pine Bend Trail (south side), crossed Pine Bend Trail, and continued into Spring Lake Park Reserve.
Since that time, the County has decided to further review options for the trail along Pine Bend Trail. One of the options being considered would shift the road to the north. By shifting the roadway, the trail can be placed along the south side of Pine Bend Trail.
The County has decided to explore the option of shifting Pine Bend Trail to the north. The County has contracted with HDR Engineering for a review of trail options along Pine Bend Trail and preliminary design. A project open house is anticipated later this year.
