For Kids

Raise a Reader

Kids who read grow up to succeed — it’s that simple.

Reading is a fundamental skill that can put your child on the road to success from the day they’re born. Teaching your child early literacy skills will:

  • Get them ready to learn to read by the time they enter kindergarten.
  • Help them do better in school.
  • Develop a love of lifelong learning.
  • Stimulate their imagination so they can go anywhere, do anything and be anyone.

Spending a few minutes each day talking, singing, reading, writing and playing with your child will help them build the literacy skills they need for ongoing educational success — and we can help. From ebooks to books in print; audiobooks to movies; online databases to children’s storytimes, music and theater programs; the Dakota County Library has the tools you need to raise a reader.
