Dakota County is hosting a public open house for Whitetail Woods improvement projects on Thursday, Feb. 28, 5-7 p.m. at the Western Service Center, 14955 Galaxie Ave, Apple Valley.
Whitetail Woods Regional Park Master Plan Improvements Phase II project calls for a vibrant mix of recreation, ecology, and interpretation. The project will embrace the complexity of the landscape to celebrate it's past history while anticipating the future of this important recreational resource. The Master Plan depicts multiple phases of development to be implemented over time to compensate for increased use and emerging focus areas.
- Camper Cabins – Implement the next phase of the camping expansion for the park including 2 new camper cabins, additional parking, site utilities, and associated trail improvements.
- Nature Play Enhancement – Enhance Fawn Crossing nature play area with inclusive play features, accessibility improvements, a permanent accessible path down to the fort building area, and accessible play pad in the pines, split rail fence in the forest, pollinator garden, shade improvements, benches, picnicking, and support amenities for families, art/interpretation/sculpture and a programmable structure with four season use.
- Shade, Warming and Program Space – Increase capacity and usability of the Commons area by providing shade for picnicking, events, and programming in summer.
- Trail Improvements – Expand recreational and educational access to Empire Lake. Increase mileage for hiking and skiing. Add accessible trail along lake. Improve accessibility of the existing boardwalk.
