A new trailhead will be constructed at 13580 Fischer Ave., Nininger Township in Spring Lake Park Reserve. It will be between the Mississippi River and Bison Range.
The project is currently under bidding. Construction of the new facility is tentatively scheduled to begin in June 2025 and completed in spring 2026. Cost of construction is estimated at $4 million.
The scope includes a picnic shelter, a parking lot, an upgrade to the current Fischer Avenue and a new paved trail. This will connect to exiting trail to form a loop around the bison enclosure.
The picnic shelter frames a view towards the bison range and the river. It comes with a bathroom. There will be parking spots provided, including a bus drop-off area and handicapped parking spots.
The project's funding includes requirements to safeguard the project site. These include extensive habitat and wildlife conservation and archaeological assessment, including native tribal input.
