Dakota County has started a restoration project at Thompson County Park. Woody invasive species, including buckthorn, honeysuckle and Siberian elm, have been removed. More than two acres of disturbed land will be restored to native oak savanna. This plant community will include a diverse mix of native flowers, increasing habitat quality for pollinators, birds and other wildlife.
Oaks and large cottonwood will not be removed as part of this restoration.
Funding for this project will be provided by Dakota County Parks.
Woody brush removal is complete. Remaining brush will be piled and burned when there is sufficient snow cover.
