County combining Natural Resources Management System Plan and Land Conservation Plan

Work is underway to combine the county's Natural Resource Management System Plan (NRMSP) and Land Conservation Plan.

The NRMSP, created in 2017, has guided natural resources management of parks and greenways.

The county's 2020 Land Conservation Plan protected land and resources with the help of willing landowners. This plan provided more opportunities for private landowners to enroll their land in permanent protection.

The combined plan will be called the Natural Systems Plan. It will guide the county's role in managing natural systems on its own land and other public and private lands.

Guidance is also provided in the 2050 Parks Vision Plan.

All three plans call for greater collaboration and partnerships to protect and steward natural systems.

The county has developed draft strategies for the new plan. Comments on the draft strategies can be sent to planning@co.dakota.mn.us.

Stakeholder engagement will occur in early 2026 to refine approaches.  Timeframes and budgets will be developed next.  A draft plan is anticipated for the second quarter of 2026.
