A Dakota County grand jury indicted Jacob John Audie, 36, on one count of first-degree premeditated murder and one count of second-degree intentional murder in connection with the death of Michael Maurice Schille, 72 of South St. Paul, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.

According to court documents, at approximately 8:48 p.m. on Friday, April 11, 2025, Audie called 911 and reported that he shot his roommate, Schille, inside their South St. Paul apartment.

South St. Paul officers responded and found Schille on a couch in a bedroom with a gunshot wound on the left side of his face. He was pronounced dead by responding medics. Officers also located an AR-style rifle in the living room, a rifle magazine on both the kitchen table and a table in the back bedroom, and an empty carbine casing on the couch, near Schille's body.

Audie was detained in the parking lot of the apartment building. He complied with officers and was taken into custody. During the investigation, Audie told officers he was the victim's caretaker and they lived together for the past year or two. He said he shot Schille using the victim's rifle.

An autopsy was performed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was determined a homicide.

If convicted, he faces life in prison without the possibility of parole, a mandatory term for the conviction of premeditated first-degree murder.

Audie remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail. The next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 16 at 1:30 p.m. in Hastings.

A copy of the indictment may be found on the Criminal Complaint Search.
