Dakota County License Centers offers the service of transferring vehicle, trailer and mobile home titles from sellers to buyers as well as renewing license tabs.
The state of Minnesota requires all trailers that are on the streets or highways to be registered. Depending on the gross weight of the trailer, not all trailers are titled. Go to the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services website for guidelines.
Fees vary for both title transfers and registration according to classification and year of the vehicle.
Cash, check, money orders, and credit or debit cards (Discover, Visa or MasterCard) are accepted at all locations.
Go to the Minnesota Department of Vehicle Services website for current rules on required identification.
Buyers must present the title certificate or Manufacturing Statement of Origin and a driver’s license or state-issued identification card if transferring ownership or first time registration.
Sellers must complete their section of the title or Manufacturing Statement of Origin labeled “By the Sellers.” The section includes:
- Date of sale
- Odometer statement
- Damage disclosure statements
- Certified tax paid letter from the County (for mobile homes)
Please bring the renewal notice that was mailed to the owner. If the renewal notice was lost or not received, the owner must provide the vehicle license plate number and personal identification so the County can access state records and issue the renewal.
Effective Jan. 1, 2016, Minnesotans who are registering, renewing license tabs or transferring ownership of motor vehicles and motorcycles will need to provide the following information:
- Name of insurance company
- Policy number
- Expiration date of the policy
