Jacob John Audie, 36, was charged* today with one count of second-degree intentional murder in connection with the death of Michael Maurice Schille, 72 of South St. Paul, announced Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena.
According to court documents, at approximately 8:48 p.m. on Friday, April 11, Audie called 911 after he allegedly shot Schille in a South St. Paul apartment. When officers arrived, Audie was located in the parking lot — he complied with officers and was taken into custody. The two men had been roommates.
After officers entered the apartment, Schille was found on a couch in a back bedroom with a gunshot wound on the left side of his face. He was pronounced dead at the scene by medics.
During the investigation, officers located an AR-style rifle in the living room, a rifle magazine on the kitchen table and in the back bedroom, and an empty carbine casing on the couch, near Schille.
An autopsy was performed by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office and the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head and the manner of death was determined a homicide.
Bail was set in the amount is $1 million without conditions ($750,000 with conditions) by Judge Luis Morales. Mr. Audie's next court appearance is scheduled for April 21 at 9 a.m. in Hastings.
County Attorney Keena thanked the South St. Paul Police Department and the Minnesota BCA for the investigation of this incident.
