Troy Michael Mitteness, 58, was found guilty by a jury for the death of his 82-year-old mother, Sandra Viola Mitteness, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.
Mitteness was found guilty on both counts — premeditated first-degree murder and intentional second-degree murder.
The jury deliberated for approximately nine hours before they reached the verdict, following a seven-day trial.
A grand jury indicted Mitteness of first-degree murder in December 2024.
According to the criminal complaint, Mitteness told detectives from the Burnsville Police Department that he stabbed his mother in his Burnsville home June of 2022. Mitteness said he spent all of her money and she was becoming suspicious. Days after Sandra died, he dismembered her and put her body parts in plastic totes. Mitteness then drove from Burnsville to Appleton, Minnesota and scattered her body parts from his vehicle into road ditches.
County Attorney Keena thanked the Burnsville Police Department and the Minnesota BCA for their partnership and thorough investigation of this case.
Sentencing is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 19 at 1:30 p.m in Hastings.
