The Dakota County Historical Society will host a Mendota After Hours presentation at the Sibley Historic Site on Friday, June 28 at 6 p.m. The presentation “Untold Stories of Black Baseball in Minnesota" will be presented by historian Frank White. Admission for this event is $20 per person or $15 for members of DCHS and the Minnesota Historical Society.
The Sibley Historic Site is located at 1357 Sibley Memorial Highway, Mendota. Registration is limited, so contact the Sibley Site at 651-452-1596 to reserve a spot. For more information, or to reserve online, please visit the Dakota County Historical Society website.
Join Frank White as he shares stories of African American baseball players in Minnesota from the 1870s to the 1960s through artifacts, photos and spoken histories that have been passed through the generations. White's own father was one of the top catchers in the Twin Cities in his day, a fact that White did not learn until later in life. While the stories tell of denial, hardship and segregation, they are highlighted by athletes who persevered and were united by their love of the game.
Frank White is an author of the book “They Played for the Love of the Game," which has been turned into an exhibit in partnership with the Ramsey County Historical Society. The exhibit will be on display with artifacts from White's private collection through the end of the summer. No admission is required to see the exhibit, but registration is required for the Mendota After Hours program and tours of the Sibley Historic Site.
