The Dakota County Board of Commissioners recently adopted the Dakota County 2024–2044 Solid Waste Management Plan, outlining how waste and recycling are managed in the county.
The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency requires all Twin Cities Metropolitan Area counties to update their solid waste management plans every six years. More than 2,300 people provided input on Dakota County's plan as it was developed.
The plan will guide proper recycling and trash management by residents, businesses, schools and public entities in Dakota County over the next 20 years. It includes strategies to:
- Reduce waste going to landfills.
- Work toward the state's goal to recycle 75 percent of waste by 2030.
- Provide waste reduction and recycling programs to meet state requirements.
The plan identifies ways to increase education about waste reduction and reuse, prevent edible food from being wasted and make curbside food scraps collection available for residents in suburban areas by 2030. It also includes ways for haulers to provide more recycling messages to their customers.
