Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced today that Trejean Derrell Curry, age 28 of Minneapolis, pled guilty to one count of criminal vehicular homicide (gross negligence) in connection with the death of the Rev. Dennis “Denny" Dempsey who was a priest at the Church of the Risen Savior in Burnsville. Judge Dannia Edwards ordered a pre-sentence investigation and set the sentencing hearing for Feb. 15, 2024 at 1:30 p.m. in Hastings.
According to the criminal complaint, in the afternoon of Monday, Oct. 25, 2021, Rosemount Police Department responded to a call of a crash that involved a vehicle, driven by Mr. Curry, and a bicyclist on County Road 42, west of Auburn Avenue. Upon arrival, officers found a non-responsive male. The man was identified as 73-year-old Dennis Keith Dempsey and was pronounced dead at the scene.
“Father Dempsey's death serves as yet another tragic and painful reminder as to why it's so extremely important for drivers to give their full attention to the road when they get behind the wheel," said County Attorney Kathy Keena. “My sincere condolences to the friends, family members and loved ones of Father Dempsey."
Keena praised Criminal Division Head Amy Schaffer and Assistant County Attorney Stephen Grego, who prosecuted this case. “I'm grateful to our prosecution team and to our law enforcement partners for their dedication to this case."
