A West St. Paul man who fatally stabbed his housemate in an adult group home will serve more than 30 years in prison, announced Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena.
Judge Michael Mayer handed down a 367-month prison sentence to John C. Adams II, 43, for the death of 68-year-old David Eugene Rahn. Mr. Adams was found guilty by a jury of one count of intentional second-degree murder. The defendant will receive credit for 1,777 days served and was ordered to pay $2,088 in restitution.
According to the criminal complaint, in the early morning hours of Feb. 17, 2020, a staff member at the group home called 911 because of a disturbance between the two men. She told dispatch that she heard Mr. Rahn scream for help from his bedroom.
When West St. Paul officers responded to the call, they found Rahn on the floor of his bedroom unresponsive and not breathing. Mr. Rahn had multiple stab wounds to his neck and back. The officer started CPR until medics arrived. Despite lifesaving efforts, medics were unable to revive him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the manner of death a homicide resulting from multiple sharp force injuries.
County Attorney Keena thanked the West St. Paul Police Department, Inver Grove Heights Police Department, South St. Paul Police Department and the Minnesota BCA who investigated this case and the prosecution team, Chief Deputy Cheri Townsend and Assistant County Attorney Stephen Grego.
