Andrew Michael Fisher, 20, of Cambridge, was sentenced today for the death of 26-year-old Avontae Troy King, Dakota County Attorney Kathy Keena announced.
Judge Timothy McManus handed down a 153-month prison sentence to Fisher for one count of second-degree unintentional murder (while committing a felony). He will receive credit for 265 days already served in custody.
Fisher entered a guilty plea in May 2024.
According to court documents, on Nov. 24, 2023, Fisher and co-defendant Tre Manuel Iglesias traveled from Cambridge to a residence in South St. Paul. After arriving, both men entered the home of Avontae King where Fisher grabbed a bag of marijuana that was sitting on a table. Fisher then ran out of the residence and Iglesias, along with the victim, followed him. Fisher, while standing on the sidewalk, turned and shot King who fell to the ground. The two men then fled the scene in Iglesias' vehicle.
A neighbor who heard someone yell “shoot him," followed by a gunshot, called 911. He provided aid to King who was lying in the street. King was transported to a hospital in St. Paul where he was pronounced dead. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office determined the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the chest.
“I hope today's sentencing shows that senseless gun violence will not go unpunished," said Keena. “My sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Avontae, especially his young children."
Mr. Fisher remains in custody at the Dakota County Jail awaiting transfer to the Minnesota Department of Corrections.
Co-defendant Iglesias' next court hearing is scheduled for Sept. 9 in Hastings.
