You can purchase a birth certificate for anyone born in Minnesota from Jan. 1, 1935 to the present. Prior to 1935, records for Dakota County births are available the Administration Center.

Walk-ins available
Service and license centers are open for walk-ins. However, making an appointment is encouraged.
Precautions for staff and visitors
- Dakota County requires both staff AND visitors to wear a mask at the Dakota County facilities. If you do not have a mask, we will provide you with one.
- Keep a distance of at least 6 feet from others.
- If you have had a fever of 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit or higher, shortness of breath, muscle aches, sore throat, or a new or increased cough in the last seven days OR if you have had close contact with someone who was diagnosed or suspected to have COVID-19 within the last 14 days, do not visit a county facility for an appointment. If you display these symptoms during your appointment, you will be required to leave the facility.

Purchasing in person
A person must show
tangible interest as defined by the Minnesota Department of Health by filling out a
Certified Birth Certificate Application.
Bring the unsigned form and fees to one of five locations.
Show proof of identity such as a valid driver’s license or passport. A deputy registrar will witness your signature.
If you don’t have proof of identity, you must bring an identifying witness, a person that has known you for at least two years and has a valid ID.
Purchasing by mail
A person must show

You must sign the completed form in front of a notary—the notary’s signature and stamp must be on the application.
