Making the decision to get out for a walk is easier when the community is “walkable.” Adding paths, trails and sidewalks makes it safer to walk and encourages more people to get out for exercise or for errands.
Over the past several years, Dakota County and cities in the county have been collaborating on strategies to make our community more walkable. Projects have included plans for regional greenways, pedestrian and bicycle master plans, community bike rides, walkability and bikeability audits, walking promotions and wayfinding signs. Funding from the Minnesota Department of Health’s Statewide Health Improvement Program (SHIP) has helped support the Active Living Dakota County initiative.
