County Project 28-66
Dakota County and the City of Inver Grove Heights are developing plans for roadway and crossing improvements along 80th Street E. (County Road 28). The project is between Babcock Trail and Bowman Avenue. It also includes school safety improvements near the Simley High School and Inver Grove Heights Middle School.
The project includes:
- A 4- to 3-lane reduction of 80th Street E. from Babcock Trail to Bowman Avenue.
- Multi-use crossing enhancements to improve access to nearby destinations.
- School crossing improvements at Boyd Avenue.
- Reconstruction of the signal system at 80th Street E. and Blaine Avenue.
This project is a result of the 2021 Dakota County Pedestrian Crossing Safety Assessment. This assessment recommended a lane reduction and improvements from the Inver Grove Heights Schools Safe Routes to School plan.
Three-lane roads promote safety when compared to multi-lane roadways. They also have shorter distances for pedestrian crossings. Three-lane roads typically have lower crash and severity rates than multi-lane roads because they reduce vehicle conflicts.
Field data was recently collected, and the project team has begun the design process. Throughout 2024, we will continue designing and sharing updates with the community. Construction is scheduled for summer 2025.
