Dakota County purchased land in Lakeville at 10125 217th St. West to build a new regional household hazardous waste and recycling drop-off facility. The Recycling Zone Plus will be a partnership with Scott County. It will provide additional services to residents in both counties. This new facility will collect similar materials as the
existing Recycling Zone in
Eagan.
The county is working with the City of Lakeville on building requirements and permitting. We are working to secure additional state funding before starting construction.
The existing Recycling Zone has been in operation for more than 20 years. Residents drop off paints, pesticides, automotive chemicals, household cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs, batteries and small electronics for proper management and disposal.
Facility staff sort, pack and store materials on-site until they are shipped to disposal or recycling facilities. The Recycling Zone has reached capacity, with resident participation increasing 33 percent in the last 10 years.
Adding a second facility will increase access for many residents and is intended to offer additional services. Dakota County expects the new facility to be open to the public sometime in 2027. The existing Recycling Zone will remain open after the proposed new facility opens.
