Children are often more affected by pollution than adults. This is because their smaller bodies can be more sensitive to harmful substances. Also, their everyday behaviors can put them at greater risk of being closer to pollutants. These things increase their risk of health problems.
Dakota County Public Health works to help protect children from environmental pollutants. The department:
- Provides lead poisoning prevention and education at community events.
- Offers case management for children with high blood lead levels.
- Works with public health nurses during asthma home visits. The team checks for things that can trigger asthma.
- Tests water at county swimming beaches.
