Children are often more affected by pollution than adults. This is because they are still growing and developing. They also spend more time closer to the ground and use their hands and mouth to explore their surroundings. This can put them in contact with harmful substances more frequently, potentially causing health problems now and in the future.
Dakota County Public Health works to protect children from environmental pollutants. The department:
- Provides lead poisoning prevention and education at community events.
- Offers case management for children with high blood lead levels.
- Works with public health nurses to check for things in a home that can trigger asthma.
- Monitors water quality at county swimming beaches.
