Under state law (Minnesota Statute 611A), all victims of crime are granted important rights.
Notification
All victims have the right to be notified about their case, including:
- Content of any plea agreement and the opportunity to provide input.
- Changes in the schedule of court proceedings when the victim has been subpoenaed or requested to testify.
- Final outcome of the case.
- Any sentence modifications.
- Appeals and the right to attend court hearings if there are oral arguments.
- If the offender files motions to have case records expunged (sealed and kept confidential).
- Filing of a civil commitment petition and the outcome.
- Release of the offender from prison or other custodial institution or a transfer to a less secure facility.
Victims can register for notifications when offenders are released or transferred from jail or prison.
Participating in prosecution
You have the right to participate and be involved in the prosecution process, including:
- Request a speedy trial.
- Provide input to any pretrial diversion program decisions.
- Attend all hearings including when the plea agreement is presented and the sentencing hearing.
- Provide a victim impact statement — either orally or written — during the sentencing hearing.
Protection
You have the right to be protected from harm, including:
- A request to keep your address, phone number, birth date and other private information confidential and not shared in open court.
- A separate and secure waiting area during court proceedings.
- Protection from discipline or dismissal from the victim's place of employment if called to testify or to attend court hearings.
- Ask law enforcement to withhold your identity from the public.

Financial assistance
You have the right to apply for financial assistance, including:
- Financial help for expenses related to a crime such as medical, counseling and funeral costs.
- Request the court to order the defendant to pay restitution for out-of-pocket losses.
